Getting your spouse to support your entrepreneurial dreams

Cubicle Nation has a great article on how to get your spouse on the same page as you when you want to develop a new business. The tips provide remedies to the following issues:

  1. They don't understand your business idea because you haven't explained it in a way that makes sense to them.
  2. They don't have enough information about your business to decide if it sounds viable or not, so they assume that it isn't.
  3. They have deep fears about risk and money that don't have anything to do with you personally.
  4. They think differently than you.
  5. They have seen you start and stop many projects in the past and are not confident that you have the follow-through skills to pull off the marathon of entrepreneurship.
  6. They don't know what the exit or backup plan is.
  7. They are afraid you will leave them if you get too happy and successful.
  8. They are bitter that you get to have fun while they are sacrificing as a corporate drone.

From my own experiences, my decision to support my husband in his entrepreneurial dreams comes from two factors: my confidence in him and our financial sustainability. My confidence in him or otherwise is largely earned by himself. You won’t have confidence in someone unless he has demonstrated some successful traits in the past such as dedication, discipline and a good self-control.

No one can survive without money. Even a good relationship becomes venerable if your living standard has to suffer or compromise. It’s important to have a contingent account which allows you the luxury to fail to a certain extent within a certain time frame which both of you are comfortable with. Most of us feel insecure when money is short.

Having unconditional support from a spouse is great however it is often the differing views of our spouse that keep our acts in good balance.

Thanks for your tips, passion. Your true words are reflected in tips 3 and 5 above.

It's great that you guys are already living an entrepreneurial dream. If you have any articles that you would like to write to help others achieve the same successes you and your husband have, let me know and maybe you can be a guest writer. :-)
